Two Artisans Exhibition: The Craft Revival
About the Exhibition | A Sequence of Unlikely and Inspiring Encounters: Two Artisans
By Vincent Castonguay in collaboration with Alexandra Gélinas and David Simard
This exhibition traces a journey initiated by photographer Vincent Castonguay in search of a return to the essence of his practice. A visit to the Montreal studio of ceramic designer Alexandra Gélinas marked the starting point of the project.
Inspired by their exchange, Vincent joined Alexandra during a residency with Dan, a ceramic artisan and engineer based on the coast of Maine. Dan’s workshop embodies half a century of craftsmanship—gestures, tools, and knowledge patiently honed over decades. Immersed in this environment, Vincent observed, photographed, and took part—capturing the intangible: light, silence, and the act of transmission.
Alexandra, in turn, inherits this living memory, which she is committed to nurturing in Quebec. In collaboration with Dan and his partners, she is working to establish a lasting space dedicated to the preservation and evolution of craft traditions.
Two Artisans brings together a selection of photographs by Vincent, ceramic pieces created by Alexandra in dialogue with this journey, and a sensitive narrative of the experience—woven through gesture, material, and memory.
— A craft revival is taking shape.
